Scholar Minds Talk Series: Garret O'Connell

Growing up in Science - Berlin

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to invite you to this month's talk on Growing up in Science - Berlin<https://www.scholar-minds.net/growing-up-in-science/><https://www.scholar-minds.net/growing-up-in-science/>. In every talk, we feature a scholar's story focusing on doubts, struggles, detours, failures, and successes throughout all career stages. The primary goal is not to offer classical career advice but to examine in some depth and in the context of a broader narrative the hidden human factors of working in academia. To know more about the rationale behind Growing up in Science talks, please have a look at this article<https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.357.6354.942><https://science.sciencemag.org/content/357/6354/942>.

Our speaker for this month is Dr. Garret O'Connell, a Senior Data Scientist at Bolt. Garret holds a PhD in computational neuroscience (University of Reading) and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Social Cognition Lab). He studied how people's choices for future vs. immediate rewards are affected by their ability to mentally simulate the future. Garret will tell us his personal story of Growing up in Science and share his insights from working in academia and industry.

The event will take place online via Zoom on Wednesday, 01.03.2023 (!), from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. (Please note that the event was originally scheduled for the 22.02.)
