Mind-Brain Lecture: Burkhard Pleger (Leipzig)

“The human somatosensory system - plasticity and cognition”

Introduction and host: Arno Villringer Abstract:
Cortical representational fields are dynamic constructs that undergo short-term plastic changes. However, the influence of plasticity on perception and behaviour is not fully understood.
In this talk I will first show how artificial manipulation of the primary somatosensory cortex (due to rTMS application) leads to short-term plasticity and perceptual changes of the skin region whose representation falls within the stimulated cortical region.
Furthermore, I will present two studies that demonstrate the interaction between changes in the processing of somatosensory inputs, perception, and behaviour. The first study reveals how the somatosensory system generates veridical perceptual decisions while the second study focuses on reward (and key central reward regions) influencing the primary somatosensory cortex and the perception of tactile inputs.
