Abstract: This talk will examine if consciousness research will ever be able to answer whether computers, aliens, insects or coma patients have conscious experiences. In order to answer such questions, one must seemingly be able to measure consciousness in the absence of report. The contrasts between so-called objective and subjective measures of consciousness have been a dominating topic of discussion for decades. I will argue that despite subjective reports are fallible, all objective measures are derived from subjective measures, and, thus, will never under normal circumstances be more correct than subjective ones. Unfortunately, relying solely on subjective measures cannot resolve the problem under investigation. I propose a combined theoretical and empirical approach that may take steps towards a solution.
